In Her Life: Mom and I Attempt Our First Trip Together, Pt. II (My Parents As Art Appreciators)
I think we were in Florence the first time I noticed. How she was dragging her feet. She’d first mentioned her feet in Valencia when she raved about her new Skechers sneakers that she’d bought at either Dillard’s or Kohl’s in Little Rock. Or maybe it was JC Penny. (Is it Penny’s?) She got a good deal for them of course. From a coupon likely. Or a good sale. Whenever I compliment mom on something she’s wearing the first thing she mentions is how she didn’t pay full price for it. Not too long ago my friend C pointed out that I did that as well. She was surprised at how comfortable her Skechers were and how her feet and ankles didn’t hurt as much as she expected them to especially since she didn’t walk much back home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dad had a pair of Skechers too. Altho he didn’t know. He couldn’t come to Italy with us because he had to go back to work. Federal employees don’t get much time off. He tried to leave me his sandals that he’d worn without socks during most of his time here. I asked him what brand it was. He said he didn’t know but that they were super comfortable. Then he tried to give them to me. “You sure you don’t want them? You don’t know what you’re missing.” I checked them later. They were Skechers. Since then I’ve noticed so many people wearing Skechers around me. Sometimes I wonder…
